Handel as Entrepreneur

“How Handel Orchestrated a Financial Comeback” is the title of a recent segment from the nightly television program PBS NewsHour.

The focus is on George Frideric Handel‘s business savvy, which includes background information on his musical productions as well as one major investment (spoiler: the South Sea Company, a significant player in the slave trade during the first decades of the 18th Century).

The three authorities interviewed give the segment serious heft: F.M. Scherer (economist), Harry Christophers (artistic director, Handel and Haydn Society), and Ellen T. Harris (musicologist and noted Handel scholar).

Harris’s contribution is particularly good.
