Today is the 116th birthday of the late Bernardo Mendel (1895-1967), whose personal library of Latin American prints and manuscripts are the foundation for the Mendel Collection, housed in the Lilly Library at Indiana University.
I’ve spent a good part of the last few months researching the music within the collection, and have discovered a beautiful and rare (if modest) number of items.
But that’s only part of the picture.
