Bach and The Netherlands Bach Society (NBS)

The NBS is one of a handful of fine Dutch ensembles that have been around for years, but for whatever reason have not achieved the international recognition of, let’s say, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.

Regardless, the NBS is just as good and their new recording of J.S. Bach’s “Magnificat” is a joy to sit down and listen to. The program also includes cantata BWV 110, Unser Mund sei voll lachens, with a striking rendition of the bass aria Wacht auf.

Purcell and La Nouvelle Menestrandie

Although I’d never heard of La Nouvelle Menestrandie or the Cappella Mediterranea before listening to their new recording of Henry Purcell’s “Dido & Aeneas,” I was familiar with Spanish director Leonardo García Alarcón, a fine harpsichordist. He doesn’t play in Dido but certainly draws a fine performance from the soloists, choir, and ensemble.
