Harmonia Podcast #150: Early Spanish Organ Music
The two featured organists on this week’s podcast are exceptional musicians.
Tientos y Batallas
Jan Willem Jansen‘s recording of organ pieces by Juan Cabanilles was a sort of re-discovery. I’d heard it years ago and forgotten all about it until searching for a classic recording to complement the other of this week’s releases.
It not only fit the bill, but reminded me that Los Músicos de Su Alteza, who contribute a couple of Cabanilles villancicos, was a terrific ensemble long before they released the Samaniego recording that I’m really fond of.
El Arte de Tañer
The new release by Danish organist Poul Udbye Pock-Steen is a genuine treat. The recording, with its varied program, added recitation, and ambient sounds, strikes me as more of an all-encompassing art piece than your typical release. It’s something to experience.
- Cabanilles: Tientos y Passacalle, Jan Willem Jansen
- Various: El Arte de Tañer, Poul Udbye Pock-Steen
