Photo: Tudor Composers?

On the left sits a distinguished modern British composer, Sir John Tavener, known primarily for his religious compositions. And on the right another notable musician, Peter Phillips, founder and director of the Tallis Scholars.

The image comes from Phillips’ blog and is titled “Two Tudor Composers?” He is, of course, making a humorous reference to their namesakes—John Taverner and Peter Philips, both prominent composers from the 16th Century (with slight differences in the way their surnames are spelled).

As an alternative, he might as well have given it a more accurate title, “Two Elizabethan Composers.”
