Gary Cooper is one of my favorites harpsichordists. Not long ago, I was delighted to discover a video of him playing the Aria, or theme, from J.S. Bach‘s “Goldberg Variations,” a work he has performed in its entirety many times. His playing is as powerful as the last time I heard him perform live.

It is fascinating to listen to just the Aria and not the subsequent variations. Even though I’m used to hearing them follow, I don’t miss them. The Aria can certainly exist on its own, offering calm, repose, and contemplation. Its simplicity is alluring.
