Video: Is This Funny?
First, watch (it’s short):
There are stereotypes which continue to linger about period-instrument musicians, mostly related to how the field is rife with people who couldn’t make it on a modern instrument, or some variation thereof.
It doesn’t seem to matter that the Early Music world, made up of various types of musicians (not just specialists), has very high standards and people who exemplify them. Respect is hard to come by, not easily earned, especially if you start off stigmatized.
But for a stereotype that might have been true two decades ago (and even then it would difficult to fully justify), I wonder if the video is an extension of the negative opinions some “modern” musicians have about their “period” colleagues.
Sure, it’s funny, but I can’t help to feel that it has a more sinister undertone.
