Video: Joan Sutherland Performs Handel

One the great operatic sopranos of the twentieth century, Joan Sutherland died on October 10 in Switzerland.

Although she was especially known for the bel canto repertoire (nineteenth century), Sutherland did sing earlier music from the Baroque and Classical Eras.

Here she is in recital, with pianist Richard Bonynge, singing the aria Tornami a vagheggiar from George Frideric Handel‘s opera Alcina. The end of the performance is particularly impressive with its deft ornamentation, high notes, and sheer volume of sound (she could really let it rip).
