If there’s one rule that has come about since the proliferation of historical performance, it is that period and modern instruments should never mix.

Why, you ask?

The combination tends to produce less than ideal results, more often than not, and for different reasons. Yet, as with any rule, there are exceptions.

Here’s a performance by Italian trumpeter Gabriele Cassone with a modern chamber orchestra of the overture from George Frideric Handel‘s Suite in D major. Cassone, who plays a natural trumpet, is as fine a musician as they come.
